Planning our CD trifold package

As we are planning to create a trifold CD package, I have used The Weeknd's album 'Trilogy' to compare how we would want our placing. I created a paper sample were I noted what we would want our package to include.

Front cover - Drake actor (not sure of shot)

First fold- Quote on the left side/Drake actor in extreme close up on right side

Open - A panoramic shot covering whole insert/CD in the middle/Credits on the far right side

Back - song title + bonus tracks/barcode/logos/Drake actor image (with city?)

Media Diary

Right now we have found our actor to do the role of Drake for our music video 'From Time' however our main problem seems to be our actor is finding it rather difficult to learn the lyrics of the song is such a short space of time. As a result of that we have had to extend his time that he has to learn the lyrics by a couple of days.

Audience Feedback on rough cut

When we screened the rough cut version of our music video to the class we were still working on the transitions therefore there were just simple cuts between each clip, for the rapping part we want to keep it without transitions as the cutaways have to be really fast due to the rap being quite fast however the female singing we want to add some cross over transitions and fades as it's a song about reflecting so those transitions we thought best suit the genre of song. We have planned to put text at the beginning which is inspired by our case studies and previous music videos our artist Drake has featured in. We also mentioned that the sound is echoey due to the video audio not being taken out yet as it helps when fitting clips together and incase anything moves out of place. Finally we mentioned that our actor was last minute therefore he did not know the lyrics entirely so we've had to work around it and plan to cut into it with other clips we have.

Editing - colour correction

We learnt how to colour correct our clips as shooting from different angles with different cameras once put togeyher we realised there was a slight change in lighting making the video not match up so we colour corrected some clips. A few were too dark so we had to increase the whites and add back some saturation which was lost. Other clip was more green than the one before which had a pinkish tint so we moved around the colours in the palettes in opposite direction from cool colours to warm colours.

Filming 4th shoot - Location (Drake)

Today was our last planned date for shooting the music video. Due to rain at our last attempt at shooting at our chosen location, we'll be making a start on shooting at this location. Currently we are very short for time as our deadline is fast approaching.

Our location at which we shot at was Limehouse with Canary Wharf as our backdrop for the music video. We shot various types of camera shots at different angles. For instance we decided to have a panning shot of the sea bank making the focus of that particular frame the buildings that made up the skyscraper.

One of the issues we faced today at our video shoot was when we attempted to shoot a dolly shot the surface of the ground was not smooth enough for it to work out well for the music video. When we looked back at our attempts we noticed that the video shot looked extremely shaky. As a result of not having a camera shoulder holder we decided that we scrap the dolly shot and replace it with another shot. However we captured some high quality shots using the 50 mm lense which enabled us also to get the lighting bright enough as we could set the aperture to 1.8 which also created a shallow depth of field on our actor making the backdrop have a bokeh effect.

After all today was a productive day for our group as we were able to wrap up our filming. Now all that is left for us to do is to incorporate our location shots into our music video followed with transitions as well as special effects to make our music video effective.

Here are some pictures and videos of how today went for us.

Filming 3rd shoot - Studio (Extras + Drake)

In the studio we filmed 5 girls acting natural in individual shots which will be cut together for one of Drake's verses.

We then filmed Drake rapping verse 1 and 2 with a white background this time in order to give a variety in the music video. We also took some still shots and close ups for any gaps we need to fill in the video.

There were no problems and all ran smoothly.

Editing..what we got so far!

Editing is going well, we have just about half of the video edited together. After the other half is done we need to put in transitions and text for the beginning of the video.

Filming 2nd shoot - Hotel (Jhene)

Day Two Video Shoot

After two months of searching for the right actress for the role of Jhene Aiko, we decided to use me (Klaudia). We decided this because we know that ultimately I would be dependable as I am a member of the group and I have more of a chance of being free when my group is so we can shoot.

For this video shoot we booked a hotel to be the location of that specific video shoot. We decided to shoot in a hotel simply because we wanted to have a feel of class and elegance to be associated with Jhene's role.

We shot the music video at a variety of angles and sections of the hotel room. This was done in order to be presented as though she came back from an event which sparked her thoughts about a past relationship she was involved in, which is evident through the lyrics of the song. The overall outline of this shoot was that she was getting ready to go to bed but one thing was blocking her mind which was her relationship with Drake.

In comparison to the other video shoot we did, today was a pretty straight forward video shoot as we were able to get all our footage for the hooks done. With regards to the lyrics it was not as hard as the verses, which was a good thing due to the fact that when we looked back at what we recorded the lip syncing with the lyrics was on point.

Here are some pictures and videos of our music video shoot.

Filming 1st Shoot - Studio (Drake)

Today was the first day of filming for my group.

We had previously planned to film at an earlier date but we had issues with our actor with regards to availability and learning the lyrics that was given to him. Therefore we had no option but to go ahead and find another person that would be suitable to be in the music video. This took us quite some time to find an actor which is why it has taken us a while to make a start with our filming.

Here is a couple of pictures while filming our video. Today we used three different cameras in order to record the music video from three different angles (Mid Shot, Side View Shot and a Worm Angle Shot). It was useful having three cameras as it saved us a lot of time during the filming period.

Recces (Planning Location)

We went to see the location,Limehouse, to see where we could film our shots. We found there is plenty of space and we were able to get Canary Wharf as the cityscape in background which will make a beautiful setting.

Media Diary

Within today's lesson we made a start on the planning stage for our music videos. At first we were given a quick brief regarding what the planning stage requires for each group undergoing the task. Once that brief was given we split up into our separate groups so that we can outline who is doing what during the planning stage of making a music video.

As a group the general consensus was the fact that we all want to play a part with regards to the storyboarding aspect of the planning stage. We decided to do this because we felt as though we all had creative juices within us that could all add up to create a magnificent end product. In addition to that we felt that it would be necessary for all of us to visit the various locations we have in mind to film at. However as it stands we came to conclusion that me and Arman would handle the risk assessment of the locations we desire to shoot at, and that Jason and Zainab would sort out the call sheets along with the actors and location permission forms.

The overall deadline for all of these tasks to be done is next week Thursday 9th October, therefore our plan for this week is that we get most of our frames for our storyboard done in order for us to have a general idea of how the music video would pan out.

Treatment - Feedback

Presenting our treatment pitch to the class was very helpful to us as not only we received feedback but it also helped us as a team to see what we have planned and what bits are missing. Overall the feedback was quiet positive and I think we stated everything quite clearly.
  • However some things that were stated were that the song will have to be changed to a radio edit as the song 'From Time' is quite explicit and may be found offensive to our viewers.

  • Another big issue mentioned by a fellow student was that filming in the evening outside may be problematic and we were questioned on how we would sort this issue out. We mentioned that some shots are only scenery based but were we will be shooting the actors we plan to use provided light by street lamps if not than an attachment LED light or a halogen light will have to be the option, we will test shot to see which will be necessary.

  • Our final issue is that we don't have a final decision on actors for the two main roles which is most important, so we may have to hold an audition with the performing arts department to find suitable actors, they will have to be able to learn quickly, listen well and be reliable.

Here is the recorded video of the treatment in action:

Analysing Lyrics for Inspo.

http://genius.com/Drake-from-time-lyrics#note-2213408
[Intro: Jhene Aiko]
What's up? Been a minute since we kicked it, you've been caught up
With them bitches, I don't get it, you're a star love
You shouldn't have to deal with that
I'd never make you feel like that, cause...

[Hook: Jhene Aiko]
I love me, I love me enough for the both of us
That's why you trust me, I know you been through more than most of us
So what are you? What are you, what are you so afraid of?
Darling you, you give but you cannot take love

[Verse 1: Drake]
I needed to hear that shit, I hate when you're submissive
Passive aggressive when we're texting, I feel the distance

I look around the peers that surround me, these niggas tripping
I like when money makes a difference but don't make you different
Started realizing a couple places I could take it
I want to get back to when I was that kid in the basement
I want to take it deeper than money, pussy, vacation
And influence a generation that's lacking in patience

I've been dealing with my dad, speaking of lack of patience
Just me and my old man getting back to basics
We've been talking 'bout the future and time that we wasted
When he put that bottle down, girl that nigga's amazing

Well, fuck it, we had a couple Coronas
We might have rolled a white paper, just something to hold us
We even talked about you and our couple of moments
He said we should hash it out like a couple of grown ups

You a flower child, beautiful child, I'm in your zone
Looking like you came from the 70's on your own

My mother is 66 and her favorite line to hit me with is
Who the fuck wants to be 70 and alone?
You don't even know what you want from love anymore

I search for something I'm missing and disappear when I'm bored
But girl, what qualities was I looking for before?
Who you settling for? Who better for you than the boy, huh?

[Hook]

[Verse 2: Drake]
Thinking 'bout Texas, back when Porscha used to work at Treasures
Or further back than that, before I had the Houston leverage
When I got Summer a Michael Kors with my momma's debit
A weak attempt at flexing, I'll never forget it

Cause that night I played her three songs
Then we got to talking 'bout something we disagreed on
Then she start telling me how I'll never be as big as Trey Songz
Boy was she wrong,
that was just negative energy for me to feed off
Now it's therapeutic blowing money in the Galleria
Or Beverly Center Macy's where I discovered Bria
Landmarks of the muses that inspired the music
When I could tell it was sincere without tryna prove it

The one that I needed was Courtney from Hooters on Peachtree
I've always been feeling like she was the piece to complete me

Now she engaged to be married, what's the rush on commitment?
Know we were going through some shit, name a couple that isn't
Remember our talk in the parking lot at the Ritz
Girl I felt like we had it all planned out, I guess I fucked up the vision
Learning the true consequences of my selfish decisions
When you find out how I'm living, I just hope I'm forgiven

It seem like you don't want this love anymore
I'm acting out in the open, it's hard for you to ignore

But girl, what qualities was I looking for before?
Who you settling for? Who better for you than the boy, huh?

A Mini Music Video Task - Let It Go

We did a small task creating a music video for the well known song from Disney's 'Frozen' movie called 'Let It Go'. We chose the acoustic version below as we prefered the sound of it and had a better idea of a possible music video for it.

Here is our version:

Creating this short music video gave us a real good feel for the real thing as we learnt what improvements would have made it better.
  • For the real thing we would need a larger range of shot types to keep the video interesting and possible let the viewer see more details. As we mostly just filmed in mid-shot the video is quite bland. I should use shout types such as close ups, long shots, side shots etc. next time.
  • I also plan to use a range of settings in our actual video to express the song better and get the right mood, the green screen is a bit too happy for the mood of the song which gave us a sad heartbreak feel.
  • I learnt that if the green screen is going to be used it has to be lighten up quite bight in order to get the full effect. For the real video we plan to avoid the green screen as it can also look quite flat and long shots can't be recorded using the green screen as the floor will show.
  • I learnt to use the important features on final cut pro to use for the actual music video such as cutting clips, adjusting sound, applying transitions and adjusting speed of a clip which are all going to be useful for the final product.
  • I found that the lip-syncing part of making a music video is the most difficult part to match to the track and what really helped my group was having the song in the background of the clip otherwise it is hard to tell which part is being lip synced.
  • I learnt that for best lip-syncing results is if the song is rehearsed a few times so that the person gets the right expressions or the music video will look off.
