Task 2 - Research/Case Studies

Video by Vorn Smith / Platform - (Stussy)       ((not a music video))

Song - DPAT-Cutthroat

This is a video made for the fashion brand 'Stussy'..I assume.

The video has one main star featuring in it who is at a platform waiting for his train.

Mise En Scene:
A day to day train platform // trains, benches, signs, rails, metal work etc.

Editing:
Wording at the beginning on side of screen transitioning
Jumps between different camera angles, from close ups to long shots
A glitch type editing where clip goes back and fourth for a split second

I have chosen this video as my inspiration as there is a lot going on in the short clip that really stands out to me. First of the camera, the angles are really thought out and I like how the clip consists of close up shots of the person followed by longer shots which keep switching...this happens a lot at the beginning of music videos usually to show off what they are wearing or the setting. I plan to use this in my own video as it makes the video more interesting than one consistent shot. I also plan to use the idea of focal point changing and depth of field like in this clip directing the viewers eyes and giving a subtle feel with bokeh in the shot. Finally depending on the song choice and what beat it has I hope to use the idea of rewinding back and forth for a split second like in this clip.

Bokeh: (shallow depth of field)

Changing the focus:

Hawk House - Chill Pill (Experiment 2)

Synopsis:
This music video is not based on a storyline and is quite random as the scenes constantly change. The camera zooms in and out at the same point on the wall and each time it zoom's out the setting changes and so do the people. The video has an effortless feel to it to match the theme of the song 'chill' but the video actually has a lot of organising and planning behind it as the scenes change often. The video is in black and white giving that chill vibe taking away the focus on colour and making the details the focal point. To support the chilled out vibe, there is a lot of negative space..the idea of peaceful room to chill. Video starts of zooming out and introducing the artists, started off by introducing the rapper in the middle as he starts the song off:

Camera:
The camera angle is at a consistent point as it is placed on moving track which zoom's in and out, camera zoom's all the way out to enable to see the setting and artists. The song includes long shots, medium shots and close up.

Mise En Scene:
Props are a big feature in this music video as the set up changes a lot throughout. Including; tables, chairs, benches, cupboards, boxes and many more.

The video uses a lot of symmetry with the middle point which the camera zoom's into being the line of symmetry and everything on the sides of it match up. Example:

What ideas I want to take from the video:

I like the idea of the camera being covered and the scene changes as it plays up the music video making it more appealing than a jump cut to a new setting. In this video the artist approaches the lens camera as he raps then covers the lens with both hands and as he lets go the setting changed to a darker theme and the two other artists sing/rap as he walks out the shot.

Lip Syncing:
There is lip syncing throughout the whole video as it is a main feature in music videos. The lip syncing allows the viewer to clearly match the voice to the face of the artist. Lip syncing has to be done in order for it to look as though they are singing/rapping it at that moment otherwise it can look strange.

Target Audience:
Anyone that likes hip-hop, rap and new music as they are a modern band.

Drake - Take Care ft. Rihanna

Synopsis:
The song is quite simply about the male and female looking after one another. The female seems to have been hurt in her past relationships and the male is trying to comfort her by telling her that he's made mistakes too and that she shouldn't worry so much. They both have feelings for each other but she is finding it hard to admit as she is scared to be hurt again. He says that he will wait till she is ready to admit it when she gets rid of the hurt feeling she is carrying.

The music video is quite conceptual, very much filled with conflicting emotions represented through the landscape shown in the video. The video has a minimalistic and artistic feel. The music video starts of slow, soft and has a chilly feeling to it due to the colours used then it gets aggressive, fast paced and hot feeling from the fire images. The video almost goes back to how it started but not as life like as before. The video is supposed to represent how everything comes to and end, the trees burn down all is left is the burnt branches and the video ends with dust representing ashes.

Representation of stars/artists:

Female artists represented quite lonely and hurt, always looking down and covering herself.

Male shown quite confident and narrative but still he turns away from the camera most of the time showing his not too confident himself.

Even when she is with him she still seems to hide herself away, her confidence is at a low point but they both know there's a connection between them two.

Camera angles, special affects, mise en scene and editing:

The music video is mostly filmed in mid-shot which zooms into a close up in some clips. We get occasional clips of the male in longshot but not of the female.

Mid shots/close ups...zooming in and out

Long shot;

Two people in shot;

 Special effects:
The music video uses quite a bit of props and effects that represent personal meanings in the song.
The video goes from a subtle, cool feel from landscape...
To an aggressive/dangerous feel from the burning trees...
To then an abandoned/ruined scene of the previously burnt trees. All representing the females emotions were it all got fired up and she was left hurt.
 everything comes to an end.

Editing:
The editing in the music video is quite basic. Clips of different scenes are linked together with cuts, as the music gets faster in middle of song the cuts get faster representing the fiery emotions, the cuts then go back to same pace. There is a lot of slow motion used in the music video also to go with the pace of song and show details.

What ideas I plan to use:
Camera shot types such as
